Camp Leach was the name of the U.S. military base used for the part of Washington, DC main campus of American University during WWI and WWII. During both wars, the university let the United States military use part of the grounds for weapon development and also testing. In 1917, 24 days before the U.S. declared war on Germany, the university let the military use it's property. It was divided into two segments, Camp American University, and Camp Leach. These two camps were said to be "the largest university this side of the sun or other burning stars."
